Six Steps to Effective Recruiting
- Take Recruiting and Hiring Seriously. Treat your employee recruitment efforts as seriously as you would any other business-related endeavor. A new employee is a major investment. There’s the cost of training and the cost you want to avoid - the mistake of hiring the wrong person.
- Use Your Network to Find Good Employees. Solicit referrals from customers, colleagues, vendors, current employees, anyone and everyone in your network.
- Prepare for Interviews. When you start receiving resumes, contact the best candidates and set up an interview schedule. Prepare a list of questions to ask each candidate. By asking everyone the same interview questions in the same way, you’ll be able to more fairly compare their responses.
- Pay Attention to Your Initial Impression. Check references but be warned that you may not get an accurate picture. Candidates are going to provide you with the names of people they know will provide a positive reference. And sometimes those references listed will only speak positively about someone because they fear legal action. Pay attention to your gut feeling in the interview and rely on insights that you gain from the interview. If you’re impressed with the candidate, bring them back for a second interview and involve others in the interview process.
- Be Clear About Job Responsibilities. During the interviewing and hiring process, be clear about the role and the job responsibilities. Set expectations upfront by clearly defining job responsibilities before hiring the candidate. A job description can be a helpful tool in establishing clear expectations at the outset.
- Make New Hires Feel Comfortable. Establish a process for welcoming new employees to your organization and integrating them to the job and the company. Get your best employees involved in training the new employee, and stay in contact with new employees to ensure they have what they need to be successful in their role.
